Tottenham set for transfer battle with Premier League rivals for expensive £31m flop

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are reportedly set to go head-to-head in a transfer battle over Manchester United winger Memphis Depay.

As per BBC Sport, the 22-year-old joined United last year in a £31m move from PSV Eindhoven, and was seen as a key piece for the club’s future under former boss Louis van Gaal.

However, increased competition and the arrival of Jose Mourinho have resulted in the Dutchman making just eight appearances in all competitions so far this season with a total of just 134 minutes of football being played.

In turn, it’s expected that he will leave Old Trafford in search of regular first-team football, and despite his troubles since moving to the Premier League, it appears as though he’ll have a choice when the January transfer window comes around.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Mauricio Pochettino is set to rival Ronald Koeman for the signing of the United star, with the latter said to have been the firm favourite to land his preferred target before Spurs became a factor.

Given that the two clubs faced off over Moussa Sissoko this past summer with Tottenham coming out on top on that occasion, it will be a concern for Koeman that he might now miss out on his compatriot.

The need for a player of his quality and the role in which is plays is evident in light of Yannick Bolasie’s injury, and so the Toffees will be hoping that they will come out on top in this transfer war.

It’s claimed that Koeman is still also keen on Morgan Schneiderlin as he lines up a swoop on the United squad, with Jose Mourinho more than likely to allow him to leave given that he has barely used him this season.
