Chelsea set to make staggering £314m in player sales in three-and-a-half year span

Chelsea are often criticised for their lavish spending and controversial youth system with countless young individuals out on loan, but there are lessons to be learned from them too.

It appears the west London giants are a shrewd outfit when it comes to selling players for big fees, and it always seems to be individuals that can be considered surplus to requirements.

As noted by The Daily Mail, Oscar could become the latest high-profile departure in a deal worth a reported £52m to Shanghai SIPG.

Combine that with big price-tags for the likes of Juan Mata, David Luiz and Ramires, and Chelsea have seemingly done an excellent job of balancing their spending with plenty coming back in the other way.

While they’ve certainly been given a helping hand by Chinese clubs over the last year with Ramires and now Oscar expected to join his compatriot in the Far East, the fact that the total from players sold since June 2013 will go up to £314m is a stunning statistic.

Again, it’s worth reiterating that it always seems to be players that don’t really fit in at the club any longer so Chelsea aren’t really losing anything and are selling on their terms.

Of course some instances have proved costly with Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku going on to show their class elsewhere in the Premier League, so it isn’t always successful decision-making.

Their rivals won’t like to give them credit, but this is probably where it’s due…
