Jose Mourinho reveals his plans for the January transfer window as he looks to kick-start Manchester United’s season

Jose Mourinho has outlined his plans for the January transfer window. The short answer is: he doesn’t have any.

When asked by Goal whether Manchester United have any transfers lined up for the winter window, Mourinho’s reply was pretty conclusive: “At the moment, if you ask me if I am waiting for someone to be here on the first of January, or if we are chasing some player because we want to have a new player here on the first of January, not at all.”

If we have learnt one thing from Mourinho during his time in management, it’s never to take his word as the gospel truth – especially when it comes to disclosing his transfer plans.

The United faithful will no doubt be hoping that their manager has a trick or two up his sleeve, as they could do with a few fresh faces to kick-start their stuttering season. At the beginning of the season, many saw United as genuine title contenders; but it has not worked out that way.

Mourinho’s men are 13 points behind leaders Chelsea, a gap that, with his former side’s recent forms, looks difficult to close. They also have a fight on their hands to finish inside the top four.

The Special One finished with one short, but significant, sentence: “Let’s just see what happens.”
