Lionel Messi yet to open Barcelona contract talks amid rumours that Manchester City are preparing a world-record offer

Barcelona are yet to hold talks with Lionel Messi over extending his current contract, report The Mirror.

Messi is entering the final 18 months of his deal at the Nou Camp, but the club’s vice-president Jordi Mestre is quoted by the Mirror assuring the Barca faithful that there is no need for any concern: “We still haven’t started negotiations for Messi’s renewal, but after those of Neymar and Luis Suarez, we hope to finalise it in the first trimester of the year.”

It is often a struggle to find words which do Messi justice, his brilliance is near indescribable. The Argentine has scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 13 La Liga appearances so far this campaign. He has directly contributed to a Barcelona goal every 68 minutes he has been on the field – which is simply ridiculous.

Last month, the Mirror reported that Manchester City were prepared to pay up to £200 million to secure Messi’s services. It’s a reoccurring rumour which often leaves rival fans shaking in their boots; but rest easy, because it doesn’t appear that a Messi-Guardiola reunion is happening anytime soon.
