Manchester United transfer news: Jose Mourinho agrees £42M deal to sign centre-back prodigy in the January window

Manchester United are set to sign Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof after the clubs agreed a £42 million deal, according to The Sun.

Lindelof has been continually linked with a January move to the Premier League giants in recent weeks, and it appears that Jose Mourinho has finally got his man. The Sun cite the Swedish press in reporting that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira flew to England to conclude negotiations and a fee was agreed overnight.

The Swedish international has the potential to form a formidable partnership with United summer signing Eric Bailly. The pair are both 22-years-old and combine their physical presence with assured defending and quality distribution from the back.

Mourinho has been successful in developing young centre-backs in the past, so the United faithful will no doubt be hoping he can do the same at Old Trafford. Notably, Raphael Varane and Kurt Zouma progressed considerably under The Special One’s stewardship.
