Sixth most expensive footballer ever wants to sign for Chelsea as Real Madrid hold talks with Premier League sides

According to a 2016 list complied by The Guardian, Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez is the sixth most expensive footballer ever thanks to the £63m transfer fee Real Madrid paid to AS Monaco when they signed him in 2014.

The only players to command a bigger transfer fee to date are reportedly Luis Suarez (£75m), Gonzalo Higuain (£75.3m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£80m), Gareth Bale (£86m) and Paul Pogba (£93.2).

Despite James still being in the prime years of his career, aged just 25, Real Madrid are seemingly ready to get rid.

The Daily Mail claim that James has been offered to multiple Premier League sides after Real informed him that he can leave. The same newspaper also state that the player himself would prefer to sign for Chelsea, ahead of any of their English rivals.

It remains to be seen whether the feeling is mutual, but it is not hard to imagine James making a success of himself at Stamford Bridge if given the chance.
