Pep Guardiola ready to hijack Manchester United move for £70m superstar

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly preparing to make a big-money swoop for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.

As reported by The Telegraph, the French international will cost between £60m and £70m next summer, and Guardiola is growing a little frustrated with his current attacking options.

The Spaniard has seen his side punished for their wastefulness in the final third on several occasions already this season, and he wants a world-class alternative and partner for Sergio Aguero.

It’s claimed that he’s ready to spend big in order to sign his preferred target, and according to the report, it appears as though Griezmann is the man to fill that void despite the fact that it will mean a transfer battle with long-time admirers Manchester United.

The 25-year-old has been exceptional since his move to Atleti from Real Sociedad in 2014, and has continued that fine form with nine goals and six assists in 21 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Having also established himself as a top player on the international stage with France, Atleti will need to prove this season that they are capable of winning trophies both at home and in Europe having fallen short in recent years if they are to keep hold of their star forward.

A reunion with compatriot Paul Pogba at Old Trafford seemed like the most likely scenario next year if he decided to leave the Spanish capital, but interest from Guardiola and a chance to play a leading role at the Etihad could be a major head-turning offer and it will only serve to further ramp up the heated rivalry between the two clubs.
