Liverpool receive injury boost but Klopp also set for major setback for Man United showdown

Liverpool pair Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip returned to full training this week, as they both eye a return to the starting line-up as soon as possible.

It’s been a disappointing start to 2017 for the Reds, as they are without a win in their last three in all competitions ahead of this weekend’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

As Jurgen Klopp gathered his troops for training at Melwood this week, both Henderson and Matip played a full part in the session on Thursday, but there is mixed news as per the Liverpool Echo.

Henderson has been out since New Year’s Eve with a heel problem, but provided that he doesn’t suffer any setbacks between now and Sunday, he is expected to start against United and hand Klopp a major boost.

In contrast, although Matip is making good progress, it’s suggested that this weekend’s showdown might come too soon for him.

Having missed seven games with an ankle injury, it’s questionable as to whether or not his fitness is where it needs to be at this point and so question marks will have to be raised by Klopp with a cautious decision over whether or not to rush him back.

It’s unlikely that he will want to risk that and so Matip is expected to miss out, which will be a blow for Liverpool as they look a much better defensive unit with him in the side.

Particularly with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to deal with on Sunday, Liverpool will have their hands full and so Klopp will be hoping that they can do better without their summer signing and get their season back on track with a big win against their fierce rivals.
