Jurgen Klopp to use misfit to prise £10m Liverpool target away from PL rivals

Liverpool have reportedly settled on Southampton defender Jose Fonte being the man to help plug their poor defence and bolster their Premier League title hopes.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have the worst defensive record of the top six clubs in the Premier League, having conceded 23 goals in 20 games.

In turn, defensive reinforcements are needed in order to ensure that they are genuine title contenders between now and the end of the season, and according to The Mirror, Fonte will be the man to sort out their issues at the back.

Should a deal be agreed, he’ll see plenty of familiar faces at Anfield with the Reds building up a solid relationship with their Premier League rivals in recent years.

The likes of Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane have all made the same switch, and it has led to Liverpool gradually improving and establishing themselves as genuine title candidates.

As for Fonte and Southampton, the Portuguese international has already handed in a transfer request in order to push through an exit from the club this month, and that will be a major blow for Claude Puel’s side who have relied so heavily on their experienced leader to marshal them at the back.

Nevertheless, the Mirror go on to add that Liverpool misfit Mamadou Sakho could be used by Klopp to seal the deal, with the Frenchman failing to play a single minute under the Liverpool boss so far this season after a series of disciplinary issues dating back to last year.

In turn, a swap deal, which will also likely involve cash being exchanged, would be a very sensible move for all parties concerned as both Liverpool and Southampton look to rid themselves of players wanting out and would help each other to solve problem areas of their respective squads.
