AC Milan transfer news: Defensive crisis to be solved with free transfer with medical set for Friday

AC Milan are reportedly set to sign Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres on a free transfer on Friday amid a concerning injury crisis in defence.

The Rossoneri have lost Mattia De Sciglio for a month, while Luca Antonelli and David Calabria are also out injured leaving summer signing Leonel Vangioni as the only option at left-back.

However, with confidence in him low, La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that Milan are closing in on the signing of former Juventus star Caceres.

The 29-year-old has been without a club since July after being released by the Turin giants and hasn’t been able to find a team since.

It looks as though that wait to find a new home could be over as Gazzetta report that he will undergo a medical on Friday before putting pen-to-paper on a contract with Milan, provided that the medical tests don’t put them off from offering him a deal.

The Uruguayan international has had his problems in the past both on and off the pitch, but provided that he’s fit and keen to play, his defensive qualities coupled with his versatility will make him a useful addition to the Milan squad.

Particularly with Vincenzo Montella struggling with a lack of numbers in that department of his squad currently, then it would appear to be a smart short-term fix from the Rossoneri as they look to get back on track against Sampdoria this weekend.

Following three consecutive defeats in all competitions with injuries to key players, things aren’t going according to plan for Milan just now.

Nevertheless, they will remain confident in their ability to win games and push on for a qualification spot for Europe, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not they sign Caceres and bring in some much-needed depth in the full-back positions.
