Liverpool are reportedly desperate to push on and beat Manchester United to the signing of Nottingham Forest starlet Ben Brereton.
The 17-year-old made the headlines at the weekend after scoring a dramatic late winner for Forest in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
While his name has been mentioned in speculation previously, that goal would have certainly added fuel to the fire as he bagged his first goal for the Championship outfit in some style to underline his quality.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool had a £2.5m bid rejected in January, but they will continue to monitor the Forest starlet and they are not the only club doing so.
The report adds that Manchester United are also interested in making an offer in the summer, and ultimately it looks as though Forest could soon be losing one of their prized young assets.
Both clubs could arguably do with adding more experienced and established players in order to achieve their objectives beyond this season, but evidently both Premier League giants highly rate Brereton and in turn will prepare to battle it out over his signature.
Forest have already sold a young talent in Oliver Burke to RB Leipzig this season, and so perhaps if the right offer were to arrive for Brereton, then they would be willing to discuss a deal.
For now though, it remains speculation but the 17-year-old will continue to be monitored and will hope to build on that stunning first goal for the club by continuing to impress between now and the end of the season as he has emerged as one of the few bright sparks in Forest’s season thus far.
