Southampton are confident that they will secure the services of Martin Caceres despite interest from La Liga giants Barcelona, according to The Sun.
Caceres joined Juventus in a permanent deal in the winter of 2012, having previously enjoyed a successful spell on loan in Turin. However, he struggled to push past the illustrious trio of Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci and into the starting side.
He subsequently left in the summer on a free transfer, and has been without a club since. As per The Sun, Barcelona have been keen to secure Caceres’ signature to solve their defensive woes – that were exposed for the world to see during their 4-0 defeat to PSG midweek.
However, the tabloid believe that Southampton have already agreed a deal with the Uruguayan, and he is awaiting a work permit to complete the deal. With the Saints having lost Virgil Van Dijk for several months to injury, Caceres could be the perfect stop-gap.
