Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is reportedly set to be the subject of a shock summer bid from Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.
The German international has around 15 months remaining on his current contract with the Gunners, but talks over a new deal have seemingly stalled again.
With uncertainty surrounding Arsene Wenger’s future and where the club is heading amid what is turning out to be a disastrous campaign, it’s more than likely no answer will be reached for Ozil until the end of the season.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, via Football.London, Mourinho is ready to secure a reunion with the 28-year-old having previously worked with him during his stint in charge at Real Madrid.
It’s added that Ozil’s reported demands of more than £250,000-a-week have been a stumbling block for Arsenal, and so it remains to be seen whether or not United would have that same issue or if they would be willing to meet his demands.
A move to United would not be a popular decision for Arsenal fans though regardless of his dip in form in recent weeks and having possibly priced himself out of a new deal at the Emirates.
It immediately rings alarm bells following the success of Robin van Persie’s move to Old Trafford not so long ago, and so Arsenal will be keen to avoid losing him to a direct rival as the report adds that Bayern Munich could also be keen.
It would be a surprise to see the former Real Madrid and Werder Bremen star in a United shirt next season, but it’s definitely worth not ruling it out just yet as if the contract situation drags on for much longer with no agreement in sight, Arsenal could be forced to cash in to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
