£17m Tottenham flop handed escape route, Spurs could recoup initial outlay

Tottenham forward Vincent Janssen will reportedly be offered an opportunity to escape his misery in London with Borussia Monchengladbach interested.

The 22-year-old joined Tottenham last summer, but managed just six goals and four assists in 38 appearances in all competitions in a tough first year in England.

With Mauricio Pochettino needing more goals and influence from his second-option behind Harry Kane, Janssen didn’t tick the right boxes and now risks being sold after just one season.

According to The Mirror, the £17m signing from AZ Alkmaar is a target for Monchengladbach, with his form in the Eredivisie prior to his stint in England seemingly enough to convince them that he can still be the top frontman that Tottenham thought they were signing.

Having sold the likes of Granit Xhaka and Mahmoud Dahoud over the last 12 months, the German side have money to spend and that could result in a move for Janssen, with Spurs potentially receiving their investment back.

While it seems a little harsh to give up on him after just one season when it does take certain players a little longer to settle and find their best form, it could be an opportunity for Tottenham to bolster their transfer kitty and spend elsewhere, one that might not come again.

Spurs will need additional firepower next season that can help them to achieve their objectives of winning silverware, and if Pochettino believes that there are now better options out there compared to Janssen, then the Dutchman could be on his way out in the coming weeks.
