Leeds Utd get their Championship season underway as they visit the Macron Stadium to face Bolton.
The cameras are live for this one Sunday afternoon as Bolton Wanderers make their return to the Championship after ‘stopping the rot’ in League One last season.
They face a tricky opener against Leeds, a team who have regularly flirted with the playoffs, without fully following through on their conviction. They look to have another good chance of making the playoffs this season, but it remains to be seen whether they can go through with it this year.
Bolton have a squad that did well in League One, but is full of players who have struggled to make it at Championship level, and there is there continued uncertainty off the pitch at ownership level and debt.
That worries me for them, and I can see them struggling to keep up with the demands of this league. Boss Phil Parkinson is going to have to hope some of his players return better this summer, and he will also need a plan for picking up points, without that I think they are going to struggle.
Leeds have a squad capable of challenging for the playoffs, but after many years of coming close, what makes them capable of doing it this season?
They have a similar squad to last season and will be looking to get off to a quick start because of that, while other teams acclimatise and bed in new players, but they must make do without two key lynchpins in defence Charlie Taylor & Kyle Bartley
The Lilywhites have a new manager in at the helm, Thomas Christiansen, a man who plied his trade in the Cypriot Leagues after Garry Monk left after narrowly missing out on a playoff place.
This is a season where Leeds have the potential to do very well, but they need to learn how to follow through with their convictions, instead of becoming the nearly men once again.
This should be a good game and a huge test for Bolton back in the Championship.
Leeds are a good team at this level, and importantly at this stage, they have a very similar starting eleven to last year, a reason why I think they will start very well.
With a settled squad, Leeds should give Bolton a lot to think about in this one, and 6/4 on the Leeds away win holds plenty of appeal.
