Man United were closely linked to signing this £50m player on transfer deadline day

It has been reported that Riyad Mahrez had been given permission to leave Algeria’s World Cup squad on Thursday to try to seal a move to Manchester United, so say The Daily Star.

They say it appeared as though a deal for the Leicester City winger had been lined up but no offer from Old Trafford was received.

The paper say they believe Mahrez’s representatives were attempting to force a deal through after learning United boss Jose Mourinho wanted to add a winger to his squad. The Portuguese manager had failed to agree a fee with Inter Milan for Ivan Perisic earlier in the window.

Mahrez had been targeted by Roma who had three bids rejected as they all fell short of the £50m price tag Leicester had stamped on the 26-year-old.

The Algerian had been also linked with Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea but was seen in Paris on transfer deadline day, according to The Daily Star.

The midfielder, who will now stay with Leicester until January at least, starred in the Foxes’ 2015/16 Premier League winning campaign, scoring 17 times and assisting eleven goals.
