Liverpool set to lose key cog as Euro giants prepare pre-contract in January

Liverpool reportedly face a growing threat of losing Emre Can as Juventus are lining up a January move for the German international.

The 23-year-old has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract at Anfield, and so that in turn is raising question marks over his future at the club.

Having improved and developed his game significantly over the last year or so following his move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014, Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly be desperate to keep him as he continues to establish himself as a key figure in the line-up.

However, as reported by The Independent, via Tuttosport, Juventus will test the waters in January by reaching out to his agents and will look to reach an agreement on a pre-contract as they will be allowed to hold discussions at that point given Can will have just six months left on his Liverpool deal.

Given how hard Liverpool fought to keep Philippe Coutinho this summer, it will be interesting to see if they show the same level of resolve in January with Can, albeit the power isn’t entirely in their hands with his contract situation.

Nevertheless, they’ll surely look to step up contract talks in the coming months to avoid an exit from being an even bigger threat, but Can may well decide to wait it out to see what Juventus are offering before making a decision, and that could leave Liverpool disappointed if he were to seal a switch to Turin on a free transfer next summer.
