Arsenal suffer bitter blow, informal Man Utd contact made amid £250k-a-week contract demands

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil will reportedly reject the club’s offer of a new contract in favour of pushing for a move to rivals Man Utd.

The 28-year-old’s current deal will expire at the end of the season, with speculation continuing to link him with an exit rather than a renewal.

According to The Mirror, the German international has decided to run his contract down, at which point he’ll become a free agent and he’s eyeing a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

It’s claimed that Ozil’s advisors have made subtle enquiries or ‘putting out the feelers’ over a move to United, and the response is described as ‘encouraging’ by the Mirror with Mourinho tipped to try and persuade the hierarchy to take Ozil to Manchester if the possibility arises.

Given that he’d be able to join on a free, that would then allow them to focus their resources on offering him a satisfactory contract offer as he’s reportedly been pushing for a £250,000-a-week deal at Arsenal, as per the Mirror.

It’s added that Ozil is also wanted by Inter, but an option to stay in England and moving to a club fighting for major honours could be an appealing alternative under the stewardship of his former Real Madrid boss.

As for Arsenal, it would be a major blow for them to not only lose their playmaker, but also to see him join a direct rival. The report also notes how Alexis Sanchez could follow a similar path but to Man City instead, and so to see their two biggest names move on to Premier League rivals next summer would be a real kick in the teeth for the Gunners.
