This Man United player will become one of the highest paid Premier League defenders, fans react in shock to the bizarre news

Phil Jones is on course to become one of the highest paid Premier League defenders with the Man United board set to offer him a mega-deal as part of an extension on his current contract.

The Mirror have reported that Jones will soon be earning £150,000-a-week. A bizarre fee for a player who has been plagued by injuries and until recently has only been a fringe player at Old Trafford, surely?

Jones has made 165 appearances in the Premier League, scoring just two goals in that time. The English defender has often found himself as a regular punchline to many football-related jokes given his unorthodox defending style and hilarious facial expressions. However, while only managing to keep 49 clean sheets in his 165 Premier League appearances, Jones is set to become one of the highest-paid defenders in Premier League history.

Despite being plagued by a lack of first-team action since his arrival to Old Trafford from Blackburn Rovers for £16.5m in 2011, Jones now finds himself as a central part of Jose Mourinho’s plans. (Fee per Sky Sports).

Eric Bailly and Jones have been the preferred centre-back partnership for the Red Devils thus far this season, which has subsequently allowed the England defender to cement one of his longest runs in the first team.

Despite Mourinho’s confidence in Jones, not everyone is convinced. Fans took to social media yesterday to express their valuation of the man who is soon to be in the same pay bracket as Vincent Kompany and David Luiz.
