Lionel Messi has yet to sign a new contract with Barcelona but according to ESPN, the club believe that it’e merely a matter of time before the Argentina captain does so.
The world superstar’s current deal runs out next summer and the club are increasingly concerned about the fact that he has yet to sign a renewal.
The 30-year-old agreed to a deal in principle with the club in June, but has yet to sign on the dotted line officially. Barcelona CEO Oscar Grau has insisted that everything is in place and that it is just a matter of time before the deal is finalised.
“The idea is for Leo, who has been here since he was little, to stay here for life because he is an icon. After his playing days we want him to continue to be linked to the club,” he stated on Saturday.
Details of the contract have not yet been released.
Messi moved to Spain to join the Catalan giants at the tender age of just 13, before making his first team debut just four years later.
He is also the club’s highest ever goalscorer with 522 goals to his name and has won 30 trophies in that time.
