They’ve accepted he’s going.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly planning for Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann to seal a transfer away from the club when his £89million release clause comes into effect next summer.

According to ESPN, United are planning to move for Griezmann again next summer after missing out on him this year, and their pursuit of the France international may have been given a real boost.

Don Balon report today that Atletico accept that it’s going to be hard to keep hold of their star attacker once he does become available for his £89m release clause, and are already lining up a replacement.

The Spanish giants reportedly have their eye on Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani to come in up front alongside Diego Costa, in what would be a strike force to rival almost anything out there in Europe.

The Uruguay international’s future at PSG is in some doubt at the moment, despite his prolific form in Ligue 1 over the last few seasons.

According to recent claims by the Daily Mail, Chelsea are among the clubs looking at Cavani after his on-pitch row with team-mate Neymar earlier this season.

Atletico now seem set to join the list of clubs in the running for Cavani’s signature, which should give some encouragement to United as they seek to bolster their attack.

Jose Mourinho’s side look to be targeting a big name for that area of the pitch, having also been linked with Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale by the Sun last month.

United spent big to bring in Romelu Lukaku this summer, but could do with extra quality in the final third to take the pressure off the Belgian to provide all their goals.

The Red Devils have scored just twice in their last three games, seeing their overall goal tally dry up since Lukaku went on a mini-drought of his own, with no goals to his name since the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at the end of September.

While United are by no means guaranteed to win the race for Griezmann’s signature, today’s claims by Don Balon will surely put them in a strong position to finally land one of their long-term targets.
