Bad news for Tottenham, Barcelona set their sights on emerging figure

Tottenham are producing and nurturing quality young English players right now, but reports suggest that they’re worryingly attracting interest from elsewhere too.

Mauricio Pochettino has done an excellent job of bringing through the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, who have now both firmly established themselves as key figures for club and country.

It looks as though Spurs have got another core piece to add to their future plans too as 21-year-old Harry Winks has continued to impress this season as he gets more minutes and more a prominent role in the team.

However, as per the Evening Standard, after initially watching Tottenham against their rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League with a view of scouting Christian Eriksen, Barcelona have seen their focus distracted by Winks as he impressed in both meetings.

The youngster has got great technical quality about his game, while he’s capable of offering defensive protection too in a deep-lying midfield role to match his vision and passing, all facets that would suit the Barca style of play.

In turn, he looks to be improving with each performance and he’ll undoubtedly continue to make a strong case to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Russia next summer too.

Nevertheless, with regards to his club future, it arguably comes down to whether or not Tottenham can take the next step up and start winning trophies.

There’s so many reasons to want to stay with the current squad, as they are emerging as a real force in the Premier League, have a great group of young players, a new stadium on the way and they’ve shown that they’ve got what it takes to take on the best in Europe.

Coupled with the fact that Winks is only becoming more important, it seems silly for him to leave.

However, if Barcelona come knocking it’s difficult to ignore, and as we saw with Kyle Walker this past summer, for some players they may well see it as a better opportunity to earn more and compete for major honours on a regular basis.
