Manchester United could be about to lose a key player and leader in their squad with reports in Spain claiming he’s edging closer to agreeing a transfer to Atletico Madrid.
The 28-year-old has shone since his move to Old Trafford in 2014, but has not been as much of a regular in the first-team this season since the summer signing of Nemanja Matic.
Still, just last season there was growing talk that Herrera could be a future United captain, though he ruled that out as he felt he had not yet won enough trophies for the club.
‘I am very thankful for the people who think so but I prefer to be careful with that (talk of becoming captain),’ Herrera told Sport360 in June.

‘All the United captains have won everything for the club but I haven’t done yet. Hopefully one day I can. But to be honest I just want to keep playing and improving.’
AS now claim Herrera is nearing a deal with Atletico Madrid, who are keen to sign a new central midfielder and who would be free to seal a deal for next season from January.
The Telegraph recently reported that United were keen to tie both Herrera and Marouane Fellaini down to new deals, with both players currently due to be free agents in the summer.
