Serge Aurier has stated he was on the cusp of a move to European giants Barcelona instead of Tottenham this summer but the deal fell through in the latter stages due to his reputation.
A report from Spanish football outlet Marca has published comments from the controversial right-back that a proposed move to Barca was halted in favour for a move to Tottenham because the Spanish giants were hesitant to complete the deal because of the Ivorians reputation.
Discussing the proposed move, Aurier stated: “It was very advanced, but [my reputation] caused an issue.”
However, in the report a Barcelona spokesperson stated that no approach for Aurier was ever made, which inevitably throws into doubt the credibility of the right-back’s claims.
The star did of-course alternatively go on to complete a move to North London sealing a £23m move to Tottenham this summer. (Fee per Sky Sports.)
Perhaps if the star is worried about his reputation stopping him from sealing a move to one of the biggest club’s in the world he should learn to keep his comments to himself rather than fueling further speculation. Tottenham fans are sure to be unhappy about this recent report which insinuates that Aurier’s move to Spurs was a compromise.
