Major Lionel Messi contract update, La Liga president reveals current situation

As we’re led to believe for now, Barcelona star Lionel Messi will be out of contract at the end of the season as his current deal expires in the summer.

It will be a concerning time for Barcelona supporters until he officially puts pen to paper and it’s confirmed by the club that he has indeed committed to the Calatan giants on a new long-term deal.

As of yet, that hasn’t publicly happened, and so having the 30-year-old edge ever closer to becoming a free agent with just seven months on his contract remaining would have some fans rattled.

However, they may not need to panic as La Liga president Javier Tebas is quoted by The Sun as insisting that Messi’s new contract has already been registered with the governing body and so ultimately, the only thing left to wait for is for Barca to make it publicly official with a press conference.

“Messi has a contract and it has been renewed,” he is quoted as saying in the report. “The contracts are official when they’re signed, not when they say they’re signed.

“And Messi has signed with Barcelona. Unless they’re lying to me, he has signed it.”

While that should offer some level of relief for those concerned that the Argentine icon may well move on at the end of the season, it might not be enough to entirely convince all that he’s signed.

In turn, the wait goes on for Barcelona to make it official, with their talismanic forward showing no signs of a decline so far this season with 16 goals in 17 games.

Messi has a staggering overall tally of 523 goals in 600 games for the senior side dating back to 2004 when he made his debut, while he’s won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies amongst many others during his career with the Catalan giants and so it’s fair to say a new deal would have been well earned.
