Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to pay around £88million to sign Inter Milan striker and Chelsea target Mauro Icardi in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Spanish giants have endured a tough start to the season, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in particular not firing so far this term.

Real are already ten points behind Barcelona in the race for the Spanish league title, with Ronaldo and Benzema scoring just one goal each in La Liga.

Icardi, meanwhile, has been prolific in Serie A, with Gol Digital recently claiming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was eager to bring in the Argentine this winter.

Unfortunately for the Italian, he now faces formidable competition for the Inter hit-man, with Don Balon claiming Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is planning a swoop.

Icardi also spent time in Barcelona’s youth team, so it could be a blow for them as well to see one of their former youngsters to seal a big move to their rivals.

The 24-year-old failed to make the grade in three years with Barca, but would now represent a huge boost to Real Madrid’s hopes for the second half of the season.
