Manchester United lost 1-0 to Basel in the Champions League tonight, putting them in a slightly uncomfortable situation going into their final group game.
The Red Devils need at least a draw against CSKA Moscow to ensure they go through, but that’s not the biggest embarrassment tonight.
Incredibly, United’s squad for tonight’s game cost a whopping £659million to put together, in contrast to the £23m value of Basel’s.

While football has long been known for upsets arguably bigger than this one, it still paints quite a picture of how much United under-achieved this evening.
In truth, it was another negative display from Jose Mourinho’s side in a game they really didn’t need to approach with particular caution.
With marquee signings like Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku in the starting XI, this United side should really be able to put together something a bit more inspiring in attack.
Basel out-fought them in the end and did well to snatch a late goal, but it really shouldn’t have been as close a contest as it was.
