£20m rated Manchester United star set to depart as European giants fight over his signature

Roma and Juventus are looking likely to embark on a battle over Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian with the Italians future at Old Trafford in jeopardy.

A report from Italian sports outlet CalcioMercato has suggested that Darmian is still attracting interest from Roma and Juventus who have now been monitoring the star for a prolonged period. The suggestion is that Darmian’s future at Old Trafford is continuing to plummet into uncertainty with the star struggling to maintain any consistent game-time.

When the Italian full-back arrived in Manchester in 2015 from Italian club Torino he looked nailed on to force his way into the United team as one of the first-choice full-backs. However, two years on the only notable achievement from the Italian is to have slipped considerably down the pecking order.

Antonio Valencia has established himself as United’s first-choice right-back and at left-back it has been a similar story.

Darmian has had to compete with Luke Shaw and Daley Blind at left-back. However, while the competition for the Englishman and Dutch star would have been expected by the Italian upon his arrival at Old Trafford he could not have foreseen the emergence of Ashley Young in the position.

Young has recently made an impressive transition from a winger to full-back and has resurrected his United career to an extent to find himself as Mourinho’s preferred choice at left-back.

The consequences in this for Darmian has been for him to slip even further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

There appears to be limited opportunities at Manchester United for the Italian and with Roma and Juventus interested in the star he could be leaving Old Trafford very soon.

However, it could still be a pricey battle for the two Italian clubs with the Daily Star reporting just this summer that the Manchester United board have slapped a £20m price-tag on the defender.
