Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has reportedly rejected an offer from Fenerbahce as he told them he expected to seal a transfer to Manchester United instead.

According to Turkish source Sabah, the Germany international told Fenerbahce he was keen to remain in the Premier League and that he felt a switch to Old Trafford was likely after he received a ‘serious offer’ from them.

This ties in well with last month’s report from the Daily Mirror that Ozil was confident of getting his wish and joining United, and that he had already informed his team-mate’s he’d be doing so.

Arsenal fans will be gutted by this news, with many hoping there will have been a chance of offloading Ozil to a foreign club instead of losing him to one of their rivals.

The 29-year-old has been a divisive figure during his time at the Emirates Stadium, though there’s no doubt he can produce the goods when he’s in the mood, as he did in his man-of-the-match display against Tottenham last week.

Arsenal fans will wish Ozil pulled that kind of performance out of the bag more often, though they’ll equally fear he could do real damage in an all-round stronger side like Jose Mourinho’s United.

The pair worked together at Real Madrid a few years ago and struck up a fine working relationship, which could be a factor in Ozil apparently leaning towards United over other offers.

The Mirror claimed yesterday, however, that Ozil was set to receive a big offer from Barcelona, who could still be strong contenders in the race for the German’s signature.
