Arsenal legend fears Gunners will suffer major blow, key man to join PL rivals

With his current Arsenal contract set to expire at the end of the season, the threat of Mesut Ozil leaving on a free transfer is seemingly a very real one.

There has been no public suggestion in recent times that the 29-year-old is set to sign a new deal, which in turn suggests that unless Arsenal are prepared to try and cash in during the January transfer window to avoid losing him for nothing, he’ll be moving on at the end of the season.

However, Ian Wright has a huge fear with regards to the German international’s next move, as he is adamant that he won’t be moving far as he predicts that he’ll link up with Jose Mourinho again at Manchester United.

The pair have previously worked together during a stint at Real Madrid and so the Portuguese tactician will know him well and what he can offer, and Wright is fearful that Ozil will swap London for Manchester and deal a huge blow to Arsenal.

“Mesut Ozil on a free to Manchester United looks a shoo-in. I’m sure Jose would love to do that,” he told BBC Sport, as noted by The Mirror.

“That would frighten me to death. He is a great talent and having great players around him would lift him up as well. I’m sure him and his agent would not push it this far if they were going to sign (for Arsenal).”

Wright makes a valid point in terms of Ozil leaving it this late to sign a new contract which rightly raises fears of an exit. However, Arsenal will surely do their part to avoid losing him to a direct rival in the Premier League and will have to do their best to push him to a club abroad.

A move to United could be a smart switch for Ozil though, given the runners that could be deployed around him to make the most of his creative abilities, but time will tell if that transfer materialises.
