Chelsea transfer target’s release clause set to be bumped up to £195million

Inter Milan striker and Chelsea transfer target Mauro Icardi is reportedly set to sign a new contract at the San Siro with a staggeringly high release clause.

The Sun have recently linked the Blues with an interest in Icardi, while Don Balon list him as among a number of Barcelona targets, and another report from Don Balon suggests interest from Real Madrid.

Unsurprisingly in demand after a superb run of form in Serie A this season, Inter now seem to be responding by doing all they can to ensure they hold on to Icardi.

The Argentina international is a valuable asset for a club looking to re-establish itself as a force in Italy and Europe after a difficult few years in the wilderness.

Icardi has 15 goals in 14 Italian top flight matches this season, giving the team their first genuine shot at the title for many years.

According to Don Balon, this has prompted Inter to look to tie the 24-year-old down to a new deal with a release clause of a whopping £195million.

This would surely be financially out of reach for most teams, even in today’s market, with Chelsea’s current club-record purchase only £60m after their signing of Alvaro Morata this summer, according to BBC Sport.
