Arsenal transfer target refuses to join Tottenham because they’re not a big enough club

Arsenal look to have the edge over north London rivals Tottenham in the transfer battle for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema next summer.

The French forward may be out of the picture at the Bernabeu, with Don Balon recently claiming Real were looking to offload him to Arsenal for around £53million.

Diario Gol now claim Benzema may also have been offered a move to Tottenham as a makeweight in the Harry Kane deal, but that the 29-year-old does not want to join Spurs.

Showing his Gooner credentials, Diario Gol claim Benzema does not see Tottenham as a big enough club for him at the moment, as they merely compete for a Champions League place each year instead of for major honours.

The former Lyon front-man is used to winning Europe’s biggest club trophy, having done so three times in the last four seasons with Madrid.

Benzema has not looked at his best this season but clearly still feels he could do better than a move to Tottenham, though he may want to take a closer look at how Arsenal have done in recent seasons.

The Gunners have only managed to win the FA Cup in recent seasons, with no league title since all the way back in 2004, and with no Champions League title in their entire history, despite plenty of attempts in the competition.

Of course, in a battle between the two north London clubs, it is clearly Arsenal who have the greater history, even if Spurs have improved a lot in the last few years and now arguably look the more competitive.
