Manchester City are reportedly preparing to open contract talks with Raheem Sterling ahead of the January transfer window when he’d been linked as a possible target for Arsenal.

The Daily Mirror claimed earlier this season that a swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez and Sterling could be back on in the winter after initial enquiries over such a deal in the summer.

However, Sterling has been in such fine form this season that Sky Sports report that he’s set to earn himself a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The England international has been one of City’s best players, scoring some important goals to help the club eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

It now seems highly unlikely that Pep Guardiola would consider letting Sterling go, even if it did boost his own chances of finally signing Sanchez.

Arsenal may now wish they’d got that swap over the line in the summer, with Sterling looking like finally entering the peak years of his career, while Sanchez has struggled for form.

On top of that, it may have been their last chance to make anything out of the departure of the Chile international, who is now heading towards being a free agent next summer.

Sterling has 13 goals in 19 games this season, his best-ever tally in a single campaign and with plenty of time to spare.
