Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the transfer of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free, dealing another potential blow to Manchester United’s plans.
The Sun reported yesterday that Mesut Ozil could also be close to signing a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, despite previous claims from the Daily Mirror that he could head to Old Trafford.
United may have beaten Arsenal in the Premier League last weekend, but the latest on Goretzka suggests it’s a double victory for Arsene Wenger over Jose Mourinho off the pitch this week.
The Sun now claim Arsenal look set to win the race for Goretzka’s signature, with the 22-year-old expected to join the Gunners on a Bosman once his contract expires in the summer.
Sky Sports recently linked United as admirers of the Germany international, and it’s easy to see why Mourinho might be after reinforcements in that position due to Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini’s contract situations.

Arsenal, however, successfully poached Schalke for Sead Kolasinac on a free this summer, and now look set to repeat the trick by bringing in Goretzka as well.
The Sun claim Wenger’s side have seen off competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona as well, with Goretzka keen on a new challenge away from Schalke.
The exciting young midfielder can operate in a variety of roles and looks just what Arsenal need in the middle of the park after some unconvincing form from the likes of Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin of late.
Goretzka could also be an ideal replacement for the injured Santi Cazorla, who faces even longer out after the latest update from Wenger.
