Champions League giants consider surprise transfer swoop for Manchester United star

Barcelona are reportedly considering a surprise move to seal the transfer of Manchester United ace Daley Blind as they look to strengthen in defence.

According to Marca, the Netherlands international is not their only target in that area, with Lazio contract rebel Stefan de Vrij also said to be an option.

Blind has not lived up to expectations at Old Trafford since joining back in 2014, and no longer looks assured a regular first-team place under Jose Mourinho.

Still, the 27-year-old could be a decent squad player for Barca, who apparently want more backup options behind key figures like Javier Mascherano and Samuel Umtiti.

Blind shone at previous club Ajax and could fit in well at a big club as long as he’s working with the right manager and playing the right style of football.

Barcelona have a tradition of bringing in top Dutch players, with their system still influenced by the legendary Johan Cruyff, who starred for them as a player and manager.

While clearly nowhere near that calibre of player, Blind’s style may be better suited to Barca than to a Jose Mourinho-led Manchester United side.

The Red Devils could also be making changes at the back, with the Daily Express recently linking them with an interest in Chelsea centre-back David Luiz.
