Manchester City looking into hijacking Manchester United transfer deal to solve problem position

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen on the transfer of Borussia Dortmund midfielder and rumoured Manchester United target Julian Weigl.

According to the Telegraph, City are keen on the 22-year-old as a long-term replacement for Brazilian enforcer Fernandinho, whom the club have been somewhat over-reliant on.

The 32-year-old Brazilian may not have long left at the top level of the game, while Weigl looks one of the top young players in Europe in that position.

The Independent recently linked Manchester United with the Germany international, with Dortmund’s interest in Henrikh Mkhitaryan possibly giving them some advantage in the deal.

Weigl looks like a player who could be ready to make the step up to a bigger club after impressing in the Bundesliga, and Guardiola’s City look ideal for his style of play.

A cultured pass-master in the middle of the park, Weigl would surely adapt easily to City’s possession-based playing style.

The Telegraph also link Alexis Sanchez and Virgil van Dijk as among Guardiola’s top transfer targets for the near future.
