Deal close: Arsenal set to complete first January transfer, player in London ahead of move

Arsenal are reportedly closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window by bringing in highly-rated young defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The 20-year-old is said to be in London ahead of completing a £2.2million move, which will then see him immediately loaned out to Werder Bremen, according to Gazzetta.gr.

This looks like it could be some smart business by Arsenal, with manager Arsene Wenger known for finding the best talent in Europe and giving youth the chance to shine in his first-team.

In recent times, the likes of Hector Bellerin and Alex Iwobi have benefited from this policy, while this season further chances have been given to academy products Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Mavropanos may take some time to actually be seen in an Arsenal shirt if reports of his loan to Werder Bremen prove correct, but this might also be for the best in terms of his development.

The Greek defender could benefit from playing more regularly at the top level in a competitive European league, something he’d be unlikely to manage with the Gunners.
