‘Why is he not sat at home?’ – Liverpool fans fume over key inclusion, but delight over Van Dijk debut

Liverpool face rivals Everton in the FA Cup at Anfield on Friday night, and Jurgen Klopp has handed a debut to Virgil van Dijk.

As noted by The Guardian, the Dutchman sealed a £75m move to Merseyside from Southampton at the start of the month, but he has been made to wait to make his first appearance.

Despite the occasion and Van Dijk’s lack of playing time in recent weeks, Klopp has opted to start him against the Toffees as he will hope that his latest signing can make an immediate impact and help keep things tight at the back.

Naturally, given the money spent on him and the influence that many Liverpool fans hope that he will have on the team moving forward, they were delighted to get their first look at the centre-half in a Reds shirt on Friday, as seen in the tweets below.

However, it was an entirely different mood when it came to seeing Emre Can in the starting line-up, and that’s likely to have plenty to do with the fact that Sky Sports reported on Friday that the German midfielder has reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Juventus to join the Turin giants at the end of the season.

Neither club have officially announced anything so it’s still speculation, but clearly the mere fact that he’s being linked with a move away and is still starting hasn’t sat well with the fans below.

While he’ll have to prove his worth and win them over, Van Dijk will hope to have a Liverpool debut to remember for all the right reasons, and what better way to kick-start this new challenge in his career other than in a Merseyside derby, in a late kick-off cup game at Anfield where he will undoubtedly get a great reception from the home faithful.
