Liverpool open talks to beat Arsenal and Chelsea to £40million transfer

Liverpool have reportedly made first contact over sealing the transfer of Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez, who has also been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Algeria international is one of the finest players in the Premier League on his day, and has made a great start to this season for the Foxes.

A player with flair, pace and an eye for goal, Mahrez could be ideal in Liverpool’s attack, which looks set to be weakened with the departure of Philippe Coutinho.

The Times claim Barcelona are set to pay as much as £142million for the Brazilian, with the player himself supposedly confident a deal is close to completion.

In need of a replacement, L’Equipe now claim Liverpool have initiated talks over signing Mahrez to fill that hole in attacking midfield.

This could spell bad news for the Reds’ rivals, with Le Buteur recently linking the 26-year-old with Arsenal, while the Sun suggested Chelsea could move for him as their next January target.

In terms of a transfer fee, the Metro claim Leicester wanted £40million for Mahrez in the summer when Roma came somewhat short of meeting their valuation for the player.

L’Equipe mention Liverpool’s interest in Monaco winger Thomas Lemar as well, but Mahrez could be a cheaper option and has the bonus of already proving himself in English football.
