Done deal: Barcelona confirm second January signing, transfer fee and contract details

Barcelona are having quite the January transfer window as the club confirmed the signing of defender Yerry Mina on Thursday.

Having splashed out on Philippe Coutinho earlier this week, the Catalan giants are making serious attempts to strengthen their squad and solidify their position for the long-term future too.

With little in the way of quality and depth in the backline beyond Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, a new defender was needed for Ernesto Valverde, and he’s now got one.

As per the club’s official site, Mina has joined in a deal worth €11.8m, and has signed a five-and-a-half year contract with the Catalan giants.

Further, they’ve disclosed his termination clause which stands at €100m.

While he’ll have to prove himself capable of making the step up to play in Europe as well as establishing himself as a key figure at a European giant like Barca, the club evidently have faith in him to do so having brought him in at this stage.

Naturally, aside from his physicality, height and defensive solidity, he’s also comfortable on the ball which is a requisite for any Barcelona player, defender or attacker, in order to fit in and play their style of football.

As a result, it looks as though they’ve signed a top player in the 23-year-old, but he’ll have to manage the demands, expectations and pressure of playing for Barcelona now. On a positive note, he will be able to settle in with Umtiti and Pique likely to remain the first-choice pairing at the back, and so it gives him six months or more to acclimatise and prepare himself for a successful future at the Nou Camp.
