Manchester United transfer boost as Arsenal pull out of race for Premier League star

Manchester United look to have received a potential transfer boost with the news that Arsenal have pulled out of the running to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Earlier in the season, the Daily Express linked Luiz with a reunion with former manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, with the Brazil international losing his place in Antonio Conte’s side.

Luiz could be a useful addition for many top sides, following his fine form last season and what looks a somewhat harsh axing by Conte this term.

Arsenal have also shown an interest but the Express now claim Arsene Wenger’s side have ended their interest due to his wage demands being too high.

Both teams could do with a new signing at centre-back this January, and Luiz seems like one of few top players who could actually be available due to his situation at Chelsea.

Still, United will surely now be favourites to win this particular transfer battle as Arsenal no longer seem set to stand in their way.

However, with Chelsea also selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer, they may now be cautious about letting a proven and experienced performer move to a rival again, even if he hasn’t been at his best lately.

If the 30-year-old were to get back to his best at Old Trafford it could go down, like Matic, as another major Chelsea transfer market blunder and an embarrassment Conte would surely be keen to avoid.
