Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is reportedly set to snub Real Madrid by signing a £200,000-per-week contract to remain at Stamford Bridge.
Sky Sports transfer expert Guillem Balague recently claimed Courtois was a target for Real Madrid alongside his Chelsea and Belgium team-mate Eden Hazard.
Courtois could certainly have been an upgrade on Keylor Navas in goal for Real, but the Sun claim he’s set to put pen to paper on a lucrative new deal with the Blues.
Their report claims the 25-year-old’s £200,000-a-week pay packet will make him both Chelsea’s highest-paid player and also the top-earning goalkeeper on the planet.
This is a major statement by Chelsea in keeping one of their most important players despite interest from arguably the world’s biggest football club.
Courtois has shone in the Premier League and is undoubtedly one of the finest shot-stoppers in the world on his day, and not a player Chelsea would want to lose.
This continues the west Londoners’ generally strong record of fighting off interest in their major stars during the Roman Abramovich era.
Chelsea fans could certainly have done with this good news after a recent slump in form and little in the way of exciting transfer news involving their club this January.
