Manchester United look in the clear to seal the transfer of £176million-rated forward Cristiano Ronaldo as Real Madrid president Florentino Perez puts him up for sale.
AS recently reported on claims by Spanish TV channel La Sexta that Jose Mourinho was keen to give United the green-light to swoop for Ronaldo, with £176m likely to be needed to persuade Real to let him go.
It remains to be seen if Los Blancos will lower their asking price now with the news that Perez is determined to offload the Portuguese and a number of other players after last night’s Copa del Rey defeat.
According to Don Balon, Perez is prepared to take drastic action after the 2-1 home defeat to Leganes, with Ronaldo and Karim Benzema the biggest names in his firing line.
Eight players could be axed in total, with Real looking in need of a major overhaul after a disastrous season so far.
Ronaldo has looked past his best, but recent speculation suggests United would still take him back, and it’s fair to say it would be well worth the risk if he could get back to anything near like his peak form.
£176m would certainly be a lot for a player who turns 33 next month, but at the same time this is no ordinary player.
The former Red Devil has a phenomenal record of 424 goals in 419 appearances for Madrid, winning four Champions League titles and five Ballons d’Or in a hugely successful club career for them and United.
Fans would dearly love to see Ronaldo back at Old Trafford, though it remains to be seen if the club remain as keen on him as they have signed Alexis Sanchez up front since that report from AS.
