Romelu Lukaku opens up on arrival of Alexis Sanchez at Man Utd, talks competition

Man Utd striker Romelu Lukaku has insisted that he isn’t worried about the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in terms of what it could mean for his place in the side.

The 24-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Everton last summer, and has gone on to score 18 goals and provide six assists in 35 appearances in all competitions.

Ultimately, the Belgian international arguably remains the only real option to lead the attack for Jose Mourinho, with the competition for places coming behind him between the likes of Sanchez, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.

That group is vying for places on the flanks and through the middle to support him, albeit Sanchez and Rashford have shown that they play up top too if needed.

As a result, it could be argued that Lukaku shouldn’t have more to worry about following the signing of the former Arsenal ace, although naturally the pressure and responsibility of scoring goals regularly will still fall on his shoulders.

“I work hard and do everything to make sure I am in the starting line-up,” he told Sky Sports. “It is the manager’s choice [if I am picked], but he knows what I can do for the team.

“He [Sanchez] is a Manchester United player – he was destined to play here. He deserves to be on the big stage. It was something he wanted as well.”

The pair should work well together as with Sanchez’s creativity qualities dropping into deeper positions and Lukaku’s instincts in the box, it would come as no surprise if they struck up an important partnership for the Red Devils to take them closer to their objectives.

While the Premier League title seems out of their reach this year given the 15-point gap between them and Manchester City, they’re still chasing FA Cup and Champions League glory and having players of this quality on the pitch will make them a threat to any side.
