Man Utd send scouts to watch Liverpool target plus potential Carrick replacement

Man Utd are reportedly making long-term plans as they are said to have sent club scouts to watch Borussia Dortmund pair Julian Weigl and Christian Pulisic.

Jose Mourinho may well have an issue in midfield beyond this season, as Michael Carrick is set to retire, as reported by The Sun, while Marouane Fellaini’s current contract will expire in the summer, as per The Telegraph.

In turn, that could leave the Portuguese tactician light in that department with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera the senior options left, but more will be needed if they intend on competing on multiple fronts.

According to the Manchester Evening News, they could be looking at Weigl to fill that potential void, while they also note that Pulisic was on their radar too when sending scouts out to Germany to watch the Bundesliga outfit.

That’s not good news for Liverpool, with The Mirror adding that the Reds have been linked with a swoop for the USA international, and so it appears as though there could be scrap between the old rivals coming up over his signature.

Nevertheless, the Pulisic link doesn’t seem to make too much sense from a Man Utd perspective, as they’ve just added Alexis Sanchez in the January transfer window and are seemingly set with countless options in the attacking positions.

Mourinho has Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard at his disposal already, and so unless one of them leaves, it’s difficult to see him signing another player to feature in the same role as that would seem a little over the top.

However, Weigl 22, and Pulisic 19, are both highly-talented young players and so if there is a longer-term vision at Old Trafford, they would fit the bill.
