Agreement close: Barcelona hope to wrap up signing of £88m Manchester United transfer target before the World Cup

Barcelona are reportedly edging closer to an agreement to seal the transfer of Atletico Madrid forward and Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann.

According to Don Balon, talks have already taken place over the move and Barca hope they can have everything finalised before the start of the World Cup this summer.

Griezmann has been one of the best attacking players in Europe in recent seasons, scoring 94 goals in 187 appearances for Atletico to attract interest from elsewhere.

Diario Gol recently claimed the France international remained a target for Manchester United, despite them just completing a deal for Alexis Sanchez this January.

Antoine Griezmann may be nearing a transfer to Barcelona

Griezmann could be an upgrade on the struggling Romelu Lukaku up front, but can also operate in a variety of roles out wide or behind the main centre-forward, so there may well be space for him in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Still, that may be irrelevant as Don Balon suggest he’s Barcelona-bound, or at least that the club are growing in confidence that they can get the deal done soon.

This would be a major buy for the Catalan giants up front, and a necessary one after the blow of losing Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, while Ousmane Dembele is yet to make much of an impact for the club.
