Pundit backs Man Utd to bring in four summer signings, picks out specific areas to be addressed

Man Utd haven’t been able to maintain the pace set by rivals Man City this season, and Mark Lawrenson believes Jose Mourinho will be backed in the summer transfer market to rectify that.

After 26 games this season, the Red Devils trail City by 13 points. Further, they fell short in the League Cup, while they still have hopes in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Nevertheless, given the lack of consistency shown by them at various stages of the campaign, their squad arguably needs more work done to it to make them a convincing rival to Pep Guardiola for major honours moving forward.

Lawrenson believes that Mourinho will ultimately get what he desires this summer, and he has predicted that four new faces will likely arrive at Old Trafford, and he’s helpfully added where he thinks they’ll address the current squad.

“Obviously they’re a little bit closer to Manchester City but I would say probably three or four, which ultimately because Jose always gets his way, he will get three or four in the summer,” Lawrenson is quoted as saying by The Express.

“I think again another creative midfield player, the full-backs are converted wingers and they’ve done okay, but I think probably Jose would need to change his full-backs. And knowing Jose, he’ll probably go and buy another centre-back because he loves having about ten of them!”

Here’s where we disagree with Mark. Luke Shaw has seemingly turned a corner at Man Utd, with Mourinho not long ago praising the left back and insisting that he didn’t need to sign another, as per the club’s official site.

On the opposite flank, Antonio Valencia has made 25 appearances this season and is a firm favourite with the Portuguese tactician, although it’s fair to suggest that a long-term natural option will be needed eventually.

With Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo at his disposal, it’s difficult to see Mourinho adding another central defender.

However, we do agree with Lawro on his creative midfield player shout as while there are lots of options in that department with the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, there isn’t a great deal of creative flair in there to offer something different.
