Jose Mourinho aims dig at Manchester United board after Leicester win

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has fired a thinly veiled dig at the club’s senior officials after United’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City tonight.

The Portuguese boss watched from the dugout as his team got their latest Premier League campaign off to the best possible start on Friday night, with goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw securing the 3 points.

The Red Devils were runners-up to arch-rivals Manchester City in the last term but didn’t really come close to beating their neighbours to the title, ultimately finishing 19 points behind.

This summer has been a difficult one for Mourinho as he has tried to strengthen his squad to close the gap this coming year, with only Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant arriving at the club during the transfer window.

According to The Guardian, the 55-year-old coach had lined up several targets for the club to chase before yesterday’s deadline, including Leicester defender Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld at Spurs, only for his targets to be vetoed by senior figures inside the club.

The Utd Report on Twitter has tweeted Mourinho’s post-match quotes tonight, which may not be pleasant reading for club chief executive Ed Woodward as he admitted finds himself in a situation he doesn’t want to be in after making his own plans about how things might pan out.

“Of course it will be a difficult season – I had my plans for many months,” Mourinho said.

“I find myself in a situation I didn’t want to be in. This is the last time I talk about it.”

It is clear that he was unable to strengthen the team at centre-back this summer despite his best efforts, which means he has been left short in an area he believes to be a problem for the current squad.

Tonight’s opening day victory may have got United off to a flyer, but it remains to be seen whether or not the defence will cope well enough in tougher matches this season to make sure that the club stays close to the top of the table all the way through to May.
