Real Madrid star left frustrated by club’s latest transfer business

Marco Asensio is reportedly not the happiest bunny at Real Madrid today following the signing of Mariano Diaz from Lyon.

The 25-year-old has returned to the Bernabeu after being re-signed from Lyon after one successful season in Ligue 1, and he’s been rather surprisingly handed Cristiano Ronaldo’s old number 7 shirt.

According to Don Balon, this has not gone down too well with Asensio as he’d hoped if Real failed to sign a big name like Kylian Mbappe or Eden Hazard, he’d be in with a chance of taking that special number.

It remains to be seen how much players really care about these issues, which seem, on the face of it, pretty trivial.

However, many are either superstitious or simply appreciate the gesture of being trusted with a number that suggests they’re an important part of the team.

Asensio has shone for Madrid in recent times despite not always being a regular starter, though he may have hoped to hold down more of a key role now after Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus.

It remains to be seen if Diaz’s arrival could also affect his starting opportunities as well as simply what number he has on his back this season.
