Liverpool duo Naby Keita has talked up the prospect of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner sealing a transfer to Anfield.

The Germany international is a hot prospect in European football right now, becoming a prolific scorer in the Bundesliga to attract plenty of interest from bigger clubs.

According to a report from Abendzeitung earlier this season, Liverpool and Bayern Munich were among Werner’s admirers, and it seems Keita is a big fan of his old team-mate.

‘We played really well together at Leipzig, and he was one of my best mates,’ Keita told the print edition of Sport Bild, as translated by the Independent.

‘It’s clear: Should he move, then I ask Timo to join us here at Liverpool.’

Sadio Mane added in the same interview that he noticed Werner standing out after watching more of RB Leipzig in action when he found out Liverpool were signing Keita from them.

‘When it was clear that Naby would join us, I often watched Leipzig matches,’ he said.

‘But to be honest: It was dreadful for me at the start. Naby saw quite a few red cards.

‘I then asked Kevin Kampl, my friend from our time at RB Salzburg, why Naby always got sent off. He didn’t know. Naby missed some important games and I could watch other players more closely. And Timo stood out.’

Liverpool don’t exactly need much else up front for them at the moment due to the success of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Still, the Reds are up against the wealth of Manchester City, who have a huge number of top class options to rotate that arguably gives them the edge over their main title rivals over the course of a long and gruelling season in so many different competitions.

From that point of view, one imagines there could be room for a quality young striker like Werner.
